実践編第八回目となる今回は、環境分野の記事を取り上げました。前回までの個人情報保護に関する文書や、金融や経済分野と比べると、原文の内容としては読みやすく面白いものですが、実際に英訳するとなると、記事の場合はなかなか難しいと思います。今回の読者さんはどのように挑んでくれたのでしょうか？一緒に見ていきましょう。

【前回宿題−日本語原文】

捨てられるビニール傘、街角で再利用

首都圏で毎週末開催する「ＭＯＴＴＡＩＮＡＩフリーマーケット」で4月以降、不要になった無色透明のビニール傘の寄付を募っている。ビニール傘は、専用のシールをはって渋谷で無料レンタル傘「シブカサ」として貸し出す。

「シブカサ」は、寄付により集まった不要のビニール傘を若者の町「渋谷」にあるカフェや雑貨店、本屋などで無料で貸し出すプロジェクト。コンビニエンスストアなどで販売される無色透明のビニール傘は急な雨などに便利だが、その多くが自宅やオフィスで眠っていたり、捨てられたりしてしまう。そんなビニール傘を都内の大学生らが作る社会起業プロジェクトチーム「ＳＯＬ」が集め、渋谷のお店に無料のレンタル傘として配布し、リユースにより無駄な資源を使わないようにしようというもの。所有者が特定されていない傘や放置・捨てられた傘は使用していない。

ＭＯＴＴＡＩＮＡＩフリーマーケットでは、これまで本やＣＤ、ＤＶＤなどを回収してきたが、シブカサプロジェクトに賛同し、不要になった無色透明のビニール傘も回収することにした。

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

【読者英訳】

Discarded Plastic Umbrellas Back on the Streets1

The “MOTTAINAI Flea Market” held every weekend in the Tokyo metropolitan area has been collecting colorless, transparent plastic umbrellas2 that are no longer in need, since April. Special stickers are affixed to the plastic umbrellas and will be rented in Shibuya4as rental umbrellas “Shibukasa” 5 free of charge.

“Shibukasa” is a project that rents unneeded plastic umbrellas that have been donated to6 cafes, variety shops, and book stores in “Shibuya”, a town for young people, free of charge. Colorless, transparent3 plastic umbrellas which are sold in convenience stores, etc., are useful when it suddenly starts to rain, but most end up sitting at home or in offices, or are discarded7. SOL, a social entrepreneur project team made up of college students in Tokyo, collects such umbrellas and distributes them to stores as rental umbrellas without charge, to save resources by reusing them. Umbrellas of which8 the owners are not specified or those abandoned or disposed of8 are not used.

The MOTTAINAI Flea Market has been collecting books, CDs, and DVDs, but has decided to collect colorless, transparent3 plastic umbrellas that are no longer needed as well, in support of the Shibukasa project9.

今回の練習用記事は、編集されたせいか繋がりがちょっとギクシャクしている感じがします。にも関わらず、（例えば、一般ビジネス文書と比べて）日本語にしかない特有な表現が使われているので、英訳には非常にいい練習になると思います。

1 .これはちょっと意味が違いますね。例えば、サリン事件などで街角から消えたゴミ箱が復活して、街角に再び現れるような場合はback on the streetsでOKです。この記事のテーマは「再利用」のことなので、やはりタイトルにはrecyclingのような言葉があってほしいです。

2.一瞬colorless, transparent は同じことの繰り返しではないかと思いました。Transparentといえば、colorlessに決まっていると思いましたが、よく考えてみると、透明だけど、色がつくビニールもありますよね。しかし、transparentだけで何を指すかは十分に意味が伝わると思います。

3.ビニール傘は冒頭ですでにColorless, transparentとして紹介されたので、何度も繰り返す必要はありません。Plastic umbrellasで十分だと思います。

4.which will be rented out free of charge in Shibuyaに直しましょう。このままだと、無料レンタルとなる対象はplastic umbrellasではなく、special stickersになってしまいます。もう一つ注意していただきたいことはrentの動詞としての使い方です。この場合、rentの後にoutが必要です。

5.rented (in Shibuya) as rental umbrellasはrentと関係する言葉の繰り返しでとても不自然な表現になります。例えば、rent a rental carやhis beach house was rented out as a rental vacation homeなどと比べてみれば分かりますが、こういう繰り返しは普通使わないでしょう。

6.have been donated to cafes…は正しく原文の意味を反映していません。傘は渋谷にあるお店に寄付したわけではありません。また、同じ文で、rents plastic umbrellas…to cafes…という読み方もありますが、こちらも原文を正しく反映していません。傘はお店に貸すのではなく、お店に来る客に貸すわけです。

7.このプロジェクトは「特定できない捨てられた傘は使用しない」と下に書いてあります。ここは自宅やオフィスで捨てられた、という意味だと思うので、discarded in homes and officesにしたほうがいいでしょう。

8.Of whichの使い方が間違っています。また、thoseも傘のことだと分かりますが、ここでは不自然です。Umbrellas whose owners cannot be identified or which have been discardedに直しましょう。Abandonとdispose ofは似たような意味の言葉なので、どちらか一つにすればいいと思います。日本語にはこういう言葉の繰り返しがよくありますが、そのまま英訳する必要はないと思います。

9.In support ofは借りて使いたいぐらい素晴らしい訳です。

Recycling discarded plastic umbrellas in Shibuya

Starting in April, the organizer of the ‘MOTTAINAI Flea Market’, which is held every weekend in the Tokyo metropolitan area, has been asking the public to donate transparent plastic umbrellas they no longer need. Special stickers are pasted on the plastic umbrellas, which are then rented out free of charge in Shibuya. This is why they are called ‘Shibukasa’ with ‘Shibu’ for Shibuya and ‘kasa’ meaning umbrella. ‘Shibukasa’ is a project that provides free rental of unwanted plastic umbrellas collected through donations in cafes, variety stores and bookstores in the trendy Shibuya district for young people.

The ubiquitous plastic umbrellas sold in convenience stores come in handy during sudden downpours, but most of them end up lying forgotten in homes and offices. This inspired a social entrepreneur project team SOL formed by college students in Tokyo to collect and distribute the plastic umbrellas to shops in Shibuya for use as free rental umbrellas. Their aim is to cut down on wastage of resources through recycling. However, they do not collect umbrellas whose owners cannot be traced or which have been dumped.
